Tylostoma allisoni was named by Squires and Saul (2004) [TYPE LOCALITY: UCMP A-8321, Alisitos Fm, Baja California, Mexico (Late Aptian). TYPE REPOSITORY: UCMP, California.]. Its type specimen is UCMP 33732 and is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Alisitos Fm. (UCB A-8321), which is in an Aptian shallow subtidal sandstone in the Alisitos Formation of Mexico.
